Exploring Yoga: From Asanas to Retreats in the UK

Yoga Retreats UK

YOGA, which derives from the Sanskrit root word “yuj,” means “to unite.” Most Hindu literature describes yoga as a discipline for controlling the senses and, eventually, the mind. The most famous is the Bhagavad Gita (written between the 6th and 3rd centuries BCE), in which Krishna describes four types of yoga – bhakti, or devotion; jnana, or knowledge; karma, or action; and dhyana, or concentration (also known as raja yoga, though not all sources agree on the term) – as paths to moksha, the ultimate objective according to Hinduism.

Where does yoga come from?

Yoga originated in northern India more than 5,000 years ago. Yoga was originally referenced in the Rig Veda, an ancient religious literature. The Vedas consist of four ancient spiritual texts written in Sanskrit. The Rig Veda is the oldest of the vedas, consisting of over a thousand hymns and mantras organised into ten chapters known as mandalas, which Vedic age priests utilised. Rishis (sages) improved and developed yoga, documenting their practices and views in the Upanishads, a massive collection of over 200 scriptures.

Yoga belongs to one of the six schools of philosophy in Hinduism. It is also an important aspect of Buddhism and its meditation techniques.
